The mains stage of the Civil service examination conducted by the UPSC consists of 9 papers out of which PAPER-VI & VII are papers on an optional subject chosen by the candidates themselves. The Papers are scored out of 250 marks each with the exam duration being 3 hours for each paper. In addition to the marks obtained in these paper being considered for the preparation of the final merit list these papers provide the candidates the opportunity to capitalize on their strengths by opting the subject they excel at from a pool of 48 subjects listed by the UPSC.
