Maratha Quota Agitations – What is it all about
In news:
A pro-Maratha organisation staged protests outside the offices of all key political parties in Maharashtra’s Pune district on Sunday over the issue of reservation for the community in jobs and education. Some leaders of the Maratha Kranti Morcha (MKM), said there is a marked difference in the relief announced by the Maharashtra government and the ground reality.
The state government announced several measures, including giving Marathas benefits meant for the economically weaker section (EWS), in the light of the Supreme Court staying the implementation of quota in jobs and education for the community.
Supreme Court observation:
- A three-judge bench of the Supreme Court on September 8 referred to a Constitution Bench the question whether states have the power to exceed the 50 per cent reservation limit.
- It was hearing petitions against the June 27, 2019 order of the Bombay High Court which upheld the constitutional validity of the Maharashtra State Reservation (of seats for admission in educational institutions in the State and for appointments in the public services and posts under the State) for Socially and Educationally Backward Classes (SEBC) Act, 2018.
