Consider the following statements

  1. Line of Actual Control (LAC) is the demarcation that separates Indian-controlled territory from Chinese-controlled territory.
  2. While Line of Control (LoC) is only a concept, Line of Actual Control (LAC) has international sanctity.

Which of the statement(s) given above is/are correct?

  1. 1 only
  2. 2 only
  3. Both 1 and 2
  4. Neither 1 nor 2

Answer: (a) 1 only

In NEWS: IndiaChina standoff casts a shadow on Nathu La border trade

  • Tenzing Tsephel Bhutia, a secondgeneration trader at Nathu La in Sikkim, has been doing business with Chinese traders for the past few years.
  • While the pandemic stalled business this year, the 200 traders from Sikkim fear LAC tensions may affect their work next year too

About Line of Actual Control

  • Line of Actual Control (LAC) is the demarcation that separates Indian-controlled territory from Chinese-controlled territory. Hence statement 1 is correct
  • It is divided into three sectors: the eastern sector which spans Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim, the middle sector in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, and the western sector in Ladakh.
  • The Line of Control (LoC) with Pakistan emerged from the 1948 ceasefire line negotiated by the UN after the Kashmir War. It was designated as the LoC in 1972, following the Shimla Agreement between the two countries.
  • It is delineated on a map signed by DGMOs of both armies and has the international sanctity of a legal agreement.
  • The LAC, in contrast, is only a concept – it is not agreed upon by the two countries, neither delineated on a map or demarcated on the ground. Hence statement 2 is incorrect
  • India considers the LAC to be 3,488 km long, while the Chinese consider it to be only around 2,000 km.
  • There is no official map in the public domain that depicts the LAC. It can best be thought of as an idea, reflecting the territories that are, at present, under the control of each side, pending a resolution of the boundary dispute.
  • In a strange irony, if the LAC is far less clear than the LoC, it has remained much more peaceful, with not a shot fired since 1975 at Tulung La.

Kara Sea is situated in which of the following ocean?

  1. Atlantic Ocean
  2. Arctic Ocean
  3. Indian Ocean
  4. Pacific Ocean

Answer: (b) Arctic Ocean

Explanation:

In NEWS: Scientists map transport of fresh water in seas of the Arctic Ocean

  • Scientist from the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT) and the Shirshov Institute of Oceanology have mapped the transport of freshwater discharged by rivers flowing into the constituent seas of the Arctic Ocean.
  • The scientists studied the discharge of freshwater from the Ob, Yenisei and Lena rivers into the Arctic Ocean’s seas
  • Together, these three north-flowing rivers discharge an estimated 2,300 cubic kilometres of freshwater into the ocean.
  • This huge volume of freshwater usually mixes very slowly with ambient saltwater, initially forming what is known as a ‘plume’, mostly near the river mouth.
  • These plumes then spread out to sea mainly due to strong winds and the rate of river water discharge.
  • They found that the Ob-Yenisel plume accumulates in the Kara Sea in the ice-free season.

About Kara sea

  • The Kara Seais part of the Arctic Ocean north of SiberiaHence option (b) is correct
  • Its main ports are Novy Portand Dikson and it is important as a fishing ground although the sea is ice-bound for all but two months of the year.
