  • In NEWS:World food prices rise for seventh month in a row in December: FAO
  • World food prices rose for the seventh consecutive month in December, led by dairy products and vegetable oils, according to Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.
  • The FAO Food Price Index averaged 107.5 points in December, 2.2 per cent higher than in November. Over the whole of 2020, the benchmark index — which tracks monthly changes in the international prices of commonly-traded food commodities — averaged 97.9 points, a three-year high and a 3.1 per cent increase from 2019 although still more than 25 per cent below its historical 2011 peak.
  • The cereal price index posted a more modest 1.1% rise in December from November.
  • The export prices for wheat, maize, sorghum and rice all rose in December, moving higher in part due to concerns over growing conditions and crop prospects in North and South America as well as Russia.
  • The dairy index climbed 3.2% on the month, however, over the whole of 2020, it averaged some 1% less than in 2019.

  • A study by the University of Melbourne in Australia has found that there is a lot of similarity between newborn as well as juvenile wolves and thylacines, a press statement on the university’s website said.
  • The thylacine, also known as the Tasmanian Tiger or Tasmanian Wolf, was a carnivorous marsupial found on the island of Tasmania, south of Australia. It became extinct in 1936.
  • It was already known that adult wolves and thylacines resembled each other.
  • The team arranged for skulls of both species from the Australian Museum and the Museum of the North in Alaska. They then conducted micro-CT scans on them and built digital models.
  • About Tasmanian tiger
  • The Tasmanian tiger or thylacine (a dog headed pouched dog) was an exclusively carnivorous marsupial that is considered to be extinct.Hence statement 1 is correct
  • It has resemblance to a dog, with its distinguishing features being the dark stripes beginning at the rear of its body and extending into its tail, its stiff tail and abdominal pouch.
  • The last known thylacine died in captivity over 80 years ago, in Tasmania’s Hobart Zoo in 1936.
  • It may also be the only mammal to have become extinct in Tasmania since the European settlement.Hence statement 2 is correct
  • Why did they become extinct?
  • It was confined to Tasmania in recent times and disappeared from mainland Australia over 2000 years ago, mainly because of over-hunting by humans, diseases and competition from the Dingo (Canis lupus), a wild dog native to Australia.Hence statement 1 is correct
  • The Thylacine was also persecuted because it was believed to be a threat to sheep and in its latter years it was hunted for the purposes of collection by museums and zoos.

  • Two rare birds — falcated teal and mallard — were sighted this time, said S Balachandran, deputy director, Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS), which assisted in the survey.
  • About Chilika Lake
  • Chilika Lake is a brackish water lagoon, spread over the Puri, Khurda and Ganjam districts of Odisha state on the east coast of India, at the mouth of the Daya River, flowing into the Bay of Bengal.
  • It is the largest coastal lagoon in India and the second largest coastal lagoon in the world.Hence statement 1 is correct
  • It is the largest wintering ground for migratory birds on the Indian sub-continent. The lake is home to a number of threatened species of plants and animals. Chilika Lake is an important habitat and breeding ground for both resident and migratory and aquatic birds, most notably flamingos.
  • The Nalaban Island within the lagoon is classified as a Bird Sanctuary under the wildlife protection act. Hence statement 2 is incorrect
  • In 1981, Chilika Lake was designated the first Indian wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention.
  • The lagoon is also home to 14 types of raptors. Around 152 rare and endangered Irrawaddy dolphins have also been reported. Plus, the lagoon supports about 37 species of reptiles and amphibians.
  • Microalgae, marine seaweeds, sea grasses, fish and crab also flourish in the brackish water of the Chilika Lagoon.
