{"id":95,"date":"2023-10-24T12:23:51","date_gmt":"2023-10-24T12:23:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/iasquest.com\/?p=95"},"modified":"2026-02-11T19:34:28","modified_gmt":"2026-02-11T19:34:28","slug":"is-israel-using-white-phosphorus-in-gaza","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kingmakersiasacademy.com\/current-affairs\/is-israel-using-white-phosphorus-in-gaza\/","title":{"rendered":"Is Israel using white phosphorus in Gaza?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>IN NEWS: Is Israel using white phosphorus in Gaza?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Global human rights organizations Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have accused the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) of using <strong>white phosphorus munitions<\/strong> in Gaza and Lebanon, in violation of International Humanitarian Law.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>About white phosphorus<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>White phosphorus is a pyrophore that ignites when exposed to oxygen, producing thick, light smoke as well as intense 815-degree Celsius heat.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>White phosphorus falls under <strong>\u201cpyrophoric solids, category 1\u201d<\/strong>, which includes chemicals that catch fire \u201cspontaneously\u201d when exposed to air.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>White phosphorus emits a distinct <strong>garlic-like odor<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is dispersed in artillery shells, bombs, and rockets.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Its primary military use is as a <strong>smokescreen, <\/strong>used to hide troop movement on the ground.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>White phosphorus is also known to mess with <strong>infrared optics<\/strong> and <strong>weapons tracking systems<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>White phosphorus can cause severe burns, often down to the bone.
