{"id":621,"date":"2023-12-20T05:39:34","date_gmt":"2023-12-20T05:39:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/iasquest.com\/?p=621"},"modified":"2026-02-11T19:25:26","modified_gmt":"2026-02-11T19:25:26","slug":"over-56000-children-under-five-years-in-india-are-suffering-from-severe-acute-malnutrition-sam-with-medical-complications-and-are-admitted-to-the-1129-nutrition-rehabilitation-centres-nrcs-acros","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kingmakersiasacademy.com\/current-affairs\/over-56000-children-under-five-years-in-india-are-suffering-from-severe-acute-malnutrition-sam-with-medical-complications-and-are-admitted-to-the-1129-nutrition-rehabilitation-centres-nrcs-acros\/","title":{"rendered":"Over 56,000 children under five years in India are suffering from Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) with medical complications and are admitted to the 1,129 Nutrition Rehabilitation Centres (NRCs) across 29 states and union territories."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Nutrition Rehabilitation Centres (NRCs)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Nutrition Rehabilitation Centres (NRCs) are operational at public health facilities to exclusively cater the under-<strong>five sick Severe Acute Malnourished<\/strong> (SAM) children who are admitted for clinical management of their medical complications along with nutritional management.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>SAM children without medical complications do not require admission in NRCs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The services and care provided for the in-patient management of SAM children in NRCs include 24-hour care and monitoring of the child; treatment of medical complications; therapeutic feeding; providing sensory stimulation and emotional care; social assessment of the family to identify and address contributing factors; counseling on appropriate feeding, care, and hygiene and follow up of children discharged from the facility.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) in India<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In 2022-23, the number of children in NRCs was <strong>1.89 lakh<\/strong>, while in 2021-22, the figure stood at 1.32 lakh. In 2020-21, 1.04 children suffering from SAM with medical complications were admitted to NRCs, the minister said.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Madhya Pradesh <\/strong>reports the highest number of SAM children admitted to NRCs at 16,276. The figure was 53,490 last year.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is followed by<strong> Gujarat (5,694)<\/strong>, which last year reported 18,978 SAM children admitted to
