United Nations\u2019 World Food Program appealed for $19 million to provide emergency assistance to tens of thousands of people affected by a series of devastating earthquakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>About WFP<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The World Food Programme is the<strong> world\u2019s largest humanitarian organization<\/strong>, saving lives in emergencies and using <strong>food assistance<\/strong> to build a pathway to peace, stability, and prosperity for people recovering from conflict, disasters, and the impact of climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Created in <strong>1961<\/strong> (at the behest of US President Dwight Eisenhower) as an experiment to provide food aid through the UN system, WFP is to be reassessed within three years.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A first development programme was launched in <strong>1963 for Nubians in Sudan<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>That same year, WFP\u2019s first school meal project in Togo was approved.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>WFP was awarded the <strong>Nobel Peace Prize in 2020<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The World Food Programme (WFP) has a presence in over <strong>120 countries<\/strong> and territories.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It aims to bring<strong> life-saving food to people <\/strong>displaced by conflict and made destitute by disasters and to help individuals and communities find life-changing solutions to the multiple challenges they face in building better
