{"id":298,"date":"2023-11-27T05:18:12","date_gmt":"2023-11-27T05:18:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/iasquest.com\/?p=298"},"modified":"2026-02-11T19:30:51","modified_gmt":"2026-02-11T19:30:51","slug":"india-announces-mandatory-biogas-blending-for-domestic-use-from-2025-26","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kingmakersiasacademy.com\/current-affairs\/india-announces-mandatory-biogas-blending-for-domestic-use-from-2025-26\/","title":{"rendered":"India announces mandatory biogas blending for domestic use from 2025-26"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Centre recently announced a roadmap for mandatory blending of compressed biogas (CBG) in the <strong>transportation and domestic segments<\/strong> of the city gas distribution (CGD) sector in a phased manner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Decision by National Biofuels Coordination Committee (NBCC)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In a meeting on Friday, the <strong>National Biofuels Coordination Committee (NBCC) <\/strong>gave its nod to <strong>mandatory blending of CBG with compressed natural gas (CNG) <\/strong>for transportation and piped natural gas (PNG) for households starting 2025-26 (FY26). <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The compulsory blending obligation will be 1 percent of total CNG and domestic PNG consumption for FY26, 3 per cent for FY27, and 4 percent for FY28.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The obligation mandates 5 per cent blending from FY29.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A <strong>Central Repository Body (CRB)<\/strong> will be responsible for monitoring and implementing the blending mandate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Objectives of CBO (compulsory blending obligation)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>To stimulate demand for CBG in the CGD sector, import substitution for liquefied natural gas (LNG), saving in forex, promoting circular economy and to assist in achieving the target of net-zero emission, etc.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Need for the biogas blending<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India, which is one of the world\u2019s largest importers of oil and gas, ships in about half of its overall gas consumption and wants <strong>to cut its import bill.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The government also aims to have<strong> 1% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in aircraft turbine fuel by 2027<\/strong>, doubling to 2% in 2028. The SAF targets will initially apply to international flights.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The steps are aimed at helping India achieve net zero emissions targets by 2070.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>About National Bio-Fuel Coordination Committee (NBCC)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It is<strong> headed by the Prime Minister <\/strong>and has been constituted for providing High-level co-ordination and policy guidance \/ review on different aspects of biofuel development. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To <strong>implement the National Policy on Biofuels,2018<\/strong>, NBCC has been set up with representatives of <strong>14 ministries\/ departments.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p
