Prelims – GS

Preliminary Examination in CSE is the gateway to the rest of the selection process conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).The aspirant’s entry to the Main examination depends on the marks he scores in his General Studies-I paper of the Prelims examination. The Exam contains 100 Multiple Choice questions scored out of 200 marks which have to be answered within a 2 hour time limit with a minimal margin of error to navigate the negative marking scheme present in the exam. The dynamics of the General Studies-I paper as set by the UPSC keeps changing with their weightage to the various subjects fluctuating on a yearly basis. The syllabus for this examination includes:

  • Current events of national and international importance.
  • History of India and Indian National Movement.
  • Indian and World Geography – Physical, Social, Economic Geography of India and the World.
  • Indian Polity and Governance – Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc.
  • Economic and Social Development – Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector initiatives, etc.
  • General issues on Environmental Ecology, Biodiversity and Climate Change – that do not require subject specialization General Science.
