A Brief Overview of UPSC Eligibility Criteria

Candidates must meet the predefined UPSC Eligibility Criteria, laid out by the Union Public Service Commission, to apply for UPSC CSE Examination 2026. The criteria for UPSC candidates covers factors such as nationality, age, number of attempts, educational qualifications, and physical standards. The basic condition in the UPSC selection process is that the candidate must be Indian national and have graduated from a recognized university or be in the final year of their undergraduate program. Additionally, the minimum UPSC age limit is 21 years old. These eligibility norms apply to both Prelims and Mains of the UPSC examination. UPSC Age Limit to Qualify for Civil Services Examination

UPSC Age Limit for General

For General category candidates, the minimum age to appear for the UPSC Civil Services Examination is 21 years, with no relaxation provided in the upper age limit. The maximum age limit for the General category remains 32 years, meaning candidates must plan their attempts within this fixed age.

UPSC Age Limit for OBC

For OBC candidates, the minimum UPSC age limit is 21 years to be eligible for the exam. They have an upper age relaxation of 3 years, extending the maximum age limit to 35 years. This relaxation helps OBC category aspirants have additional attempts and prepare strategically for the UPSC examination.

UPSC Age Limit for SC/ST

SC/ST candidates must also be at least 21 years old to apply for the UPSC CSE. However, they are granted an upper age relaxation of 5 years, allowing them to attempt the exam up to 37 years of age. This extended age limit supports SC/ST aspirants by offering a wider preparation opportunity.

UPSC Educational Qualification

Below, we have given the educational qualifications aligned with IAS eligibility criteria, required to apply for UPSC examination:

• The UPSC aspirant must have graduated from the Government recognized university or possess an equivalent qualification.
• The candidates who are in the final year or awaiting results can apply for UPSC Preliminary examination. Those who are likely to appear for UPSC mains examination must produce the proof of having passed the said examination along with the application.
• The candidates who are having professional and technical degrees recognized by the Indian Government. 
• Medical students who have completed the final year, but the internship is pending, can also apply for IAS examination. But, for the Mains examination, those candidates must submit the application, course completion certificate and internship certificate from the concerned authority of University/Institution. 

UPSC Exam Nationality Criteria

In the following, you can find the nationality criteria to be qualified for UPSC Civil Services Examination:

For IAS/IPS:

• The candidates must be an Indian Citizen only.

For All Other Services:

• The candidates must be either:

                   1. citizen of India, or

                  2. A citizen of Nepal, or

                  3. A citizen of Bhutan, or

                 4. A Tibetan refugee who came to India before 1st January 1962 with the intent to settle in India, permanently, or

                5. A Person of India Origin (PIO) who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Ethiopia, Zaire and Vietnam with the intent to settle in India, permanently. 

• The candidates who are belonging to (b), (c), (d) and (e) must provide the certificate of eligibility issued by the Government of India. This might require the examination before the issuance of certification, but it is mandatory for the appointment. 

Note: A candidate belonging to (b), (c), and (d) are not eligible for the appointment for Indian Foreign Service (IFS).

Number of Attempts for UPSC Exam

Again, the number of attempts for UPSC examination varies depending on the candidates’ category. The following list will help:

• General Category: 6 attempts till the 32 years of age.

• OBC Candidates: 9 attempts till the 35 years of age.

• SC/ST Candidates: Unlimited attempts till the 37 years of age.

Restrictions to Apply for UPSC Examination

Candidates appointed to IAS/IFS/IPS positions based on the results of the previous examination and currently serving in either of these three services, are NOT ELIGIBLE to apply for that particular year.
